Pharmaceuticals in the Environment
نویسنده
چکیده
Pharmaceuticals are chemicals that are used because of their biological activity. They are often excreted unchanged and can reach the environment. Throughout developed countries, the pharmaceutical concentrations in the aquatic environment are in the same range (μg L−1 and below); however, it is not clear whether this holds for less-developed countries too. The health risks of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) remain poorly understood. Although there are no known shorttermeffects onhumans, long-termeffects cannot be ruled out until there is more research. The significance of metabolites and transformation products resulting from the parent APIs is not yet known. Awareness of the presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment, coupled with some evidence of effects, suggests that precautionary management action to reduce the release of pharmaceuticals to the environment should be considered. As for effluent treatment, no technology works well for all compounds. Advanced effluent treatment is not sustainable because of energy consumption, efficiency, and efficacy. Therefore, its appropriateness must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Increased handling and use measures at the source and better biodegradable pharmaceuticals are necessary in the long run for the new paradigm called “sustainable pharmacy.” 57 A nn u. R ev . Hazard assessment for a pharmaceutical mixture detected in the upper Tennessee River using Daphnia magna
Widespread use of pharmaceuticals has resulted in mixture concentrations ranging from mg/L in effluent to µg/L concentrations in surface water. In a 2008 study, 13 pharmaceuticals, ranging in amounts from 0.0028 to 0.1757 µg/l, were identified in the Tennessee River, USA and its tributaries. In order to address the need for risk assessment of environmentally relevant pharmaceutical mixtures, <e...
متن کاملBiological Removal of the Mixed Pharmaceuticals: Diclofenac, Ibuprofen, and Sulfamethoxazole Using a Bacterial Consortium
Background: The presence of pharmaceuticals at low concentrations (ng to μg) in the environment has become a hot spot for researchers in the past decades due to the unknown environmental impact and the possible damages they might have to the plantae and fauna present in the aquatic systems, as well as to the other living organisms. Objectives: The aim of t...
متن کاملRemoval of Pharmaceutical Compounds from Hospital Wastewaters Using Nanomaterials: A Review
Over the past few years, residual pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antipyretics drugs, hormones) have begun to be considered as emerging environmental pollutants due to their continuous input and persistence to aquatic ecosystem even at low concentrations. Therefore, the development of efficient, cost-effective, and stable methods and materials for the wastewaters treatment have g...
متن کاملHousehold Disposal of Pharmaceuticals as a Pathway for Aquatic Contamination in the United Kingdom
Pharmaceuticals are produced and used in increasingly large volumes every year. With this growth comes concern about the fate and effects of these compounds in the environment. The discovery of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment has stimulated research in the last decade. A wide range of pharmaceuticals has been found in fresh and marine waters, and it has recently been shown that even ...
متن کاملPharmaceuticals in the environment: scientific evidence of risks and its regulation.
During the past two decades scientists, regulatory agencies and the European Commission have acknowledged pharmaceuticals to be an emerging environmental problem. In parallel, a regulatory framework for environmental risk assessment (ERA) of pharmaceutical products has been developed. Since the regulatory guidelines came into force the German Federal Agency (UBA) has been evaluating ERAs for hu...
متن کاملAn electrode immobilized in a graphite matrix with ion pair complex for the determination of diclofenac in pharmaceuticals
A simple, precise, rapid and low-cost potentiometric method for diclofenac determination in pharmaceuticals is proposed. A new diclofenac-sensitive electrode was constructed by incorporating the diclofenac ion pair complex with butyl rhodamine B into graphite matrix. The electrode exhibited a linear response over the concentration range of 1 × 10-4 – 5 × 10-2 mol L-1, a detection limit of 3.9×1...
